  1. Hello, all — I thought you might like Mr. P’s choices for 1992, which he offered to USA Today. Here’s the basic info, although there is a longer article.

Best Picture: Enchanted April. Runners-Up: Howards End, A Midnight Clear, Night and the City, Mr. Saturday Night

Best Actor: Armand Assante, The Mambo Kings. Runners-Up: Jack Lemmon, Glengarry Glen Ross; Dustin Hoffman, Hero; Billy Crystal, Mr. Saturday Night

Best Actress: Michelle Pfeiffer, Batman Returns. Runners-Up: Emma Thompson, Howards End; Marisa Tomei, My Cousin Vinny; Robin Wright, The Playboys; Thandie Newton, Flirting.

  2. Thanks! Interesting choices, as usual… I haven’t seen several of the titles (“Night and the City”, “A Midnight Clear”, “The Playboys”), but I look forward to checking them out.

  3. Does anyone know if Mr. Peary is planning a follow up to Alternate Oscars? This is my all time favorite movie book, and I would love to see his choices for the last twenty years.

  4. As far as I know Peary has no intention of writing another book about film, since he’s squarely immersed in sports at this point (baseball in particular). This is indeed a shame, as I’d love to hear his opinion on recent “must-see” titles as well as alternate Oscar choices. However, when he wrote to me years ago, he mentioned that he wasn’t seeing nearly as many movies as he used to, so I’m not sure he’s kept up well enough to even attempt such a sequel.
