Another Take: 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die

In 2003, Barron’s published a massive volume entitled 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, edited by Steven Jay Schneider and with contributions by numerous film critics. It’s been updated regularly since then, given a new cover image each time, and translated into numerous languages.

According to the back cover of the original (2003) edition:

“These are films that nobody should miss: from 12 Angry Men to Z, from art house classics to westerns, the selections for this book are based on historical, popular, and critical acclaim.”

  1. I wouldn’t quite trust the authors opinions there.

When it comes to James Bond, I’d agree with Goldfinger but drop Skyfall in favour of Dr. No, From Russia with Love, and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service; much more significant films in the series.

As regards Tarantino; how can the list not have Jackie Brown but it does have Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained?

On the Marvel Cinematic universe it has Guardians of the Galaxy as sole representative, but no Iron Man (the first) or The Avengers (biggest) both of which are – again – far more significant.

Add Batman Begins but drop The Dark Knight. No Mad Max 2 … but Mad Max: Fury Road! Why?
