In 2003, Barron’s published a massive volume entitled 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die (edited by Steven Jay Schneider, and with contributions by 57 film critics). It was updated in 2005 and in 2008, and given a new cover image each time.
According to the back of the book:
“These are films that nobody should miss: from 12 Angry Men to Z, from art house classics to westerns, the selections for this book are based on historical, popular, and critical acclaim.”
Of the pre-1987 titles, 97 aren’t mentioned at all in Guide for the Film Fanatic, and 162 are simply listed by Peary as “Additional Must-See Titles” rather than given full reviews. Clearly, “must see” status is as subjective as ever!
