href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=97297\"><em>Hour of the Wolf<\/em> (1968)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=97289\"><em>Shame<\/em> (1968)<\/a> &#8212; was this enigmatic exploration of themes from many other Bergman films (guilt, shame, isolation), but perhaps especially &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Passion_of_Anna\">as argued by Bergman scholar Jerry Vermilye<\/a> &#8212; the &#8220;thread of violence intruding on ordinary lives.&#8221; The film opens on the pastoral scene of pipe-smoking von Sydow looking out at the sun as he fixes his roof and we hear sheep bells tinkling in the backdrop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Passion-of-Anna-Pipe-Roof.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
