In this case, Widmark didn&#8217;t get along with the original director, Robert Totten (who primarily worked in television), so Don Siegel was brought in to finish up the job &#8212; but he didn&#8217;t want to take credit for work mostly completed by someone else, so <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_Smithee\">&#8220;Alan Smithee&#8221;<\/a> (a creative variation on the too-simple first pass try of &#8220;Al Smith&#8221;) was the result. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Death-of-a-Gunfighter-Alan-Smithee.png\"><img this film is about attempting to fire someone perceived as incompetent in his job given what it became known for.)<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I was unduly biased, but as soon as I saw Smithee&#8217;s name flashing across the screen, I started noticing the film&#8217;s clunkiness; indeed, many wonder what this film could have been like with Siegel at the helm the entire way. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Death-of-a-Gunfighter-Prostitute.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Death-of-a-Gunfighter-Prostitute-1024x554.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"346\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-97886\" on an entire town feeling resentment for Widmark&#8217;s character, for no clear reason &#8212; doesn&#8217;t quite hold its weight; though Kent Smith, who film fanatics should fairly quickly recognize from <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=17043\"><em>Cat People<\/em> (1942)<\/a>, plays the role of a desperately ashamed lawyer quite well. <\/p>\n<p><a
