Of these, 10 are in a language other than English: <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=97207\">one is in Japanese<\/a>, one is in Wolof-and-French,  two (<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=97289\">both by<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=97297\">Ingmar Bergman<\/a>) are in Swedish, three are in Spanish, and three are in French (<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=4619\">one by Demy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=3461\">one by Truffaut<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=76622\">one by Chabrol<\/a>). We definitely see the strong emergence of Third Cinema (i.e., non-Hollywood and European movies) this year &#8212; specifically Ousmane Sembane\u2019s relentlessly depressing Senegalese film <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=12022\"><em>Mandabi<\/em> (1968)<\/a> and all three of the Spanish-language titles: two from Cuba &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=127\"><em>Memories of Underdevelopment<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=97580\"><em>Lucia<\/em><\/a> &#8212; and one, <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=97645\"><em>The Hour of the Furnaces<\/em><\/a>, from Argentina<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Memories-View.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Memories-View.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1208\" height=\"716\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-97681\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Memories-View.png 1208w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Memories-View-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Memories-View-1024x607.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Memories-View-128x76.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Memories-View-768x455.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Memories-View-456x270.png 456w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1208px) 100vw, 1208px\" \/><\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sergio Leone&#8217;s most epic spaghetti western was <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=97496\"><em>Once Upon a Time in the West<\/em><\/a>, which I recently revisited and reviewed. It features a wonderfully villainous turn by Henry Fonda, and a powerful portrayal by Claudia Cardinale as a savvy whore-turned-businesswoman who kicks ass as soon as she shows up on her new home-front. It&#8217;s a beautifully shot film with numerous memorable sequences, and another essential score by Ennio Morricone.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Once-Upon-a-Time-Cardinale-Shock.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Once-Upon-a-Time-Cardinale-Shock.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1284\" height=\"552\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-97708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Once-Upon-a-Time-Cardinale-Shock.png 1284w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Once-Upon-a-Time-Cardinale-Shock-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Once-Upon-a-Time-Cardinale-Shock-1024x440.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Once-Upon-a-Time-Cardinale-Shock-128x55.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Once-Upon-a-Time-Cardinale-Shock-768x330.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Once-Upon-a-Time-Cardinale-Shock-604x260.png 604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1284px) 100vw, 1284px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>I also fairly recently rewatched George Romero&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=13027\"><em>Night of the Living Dead<\/em><\/a> (with my son, to help prepare him for performing in a play adaptation). We both agreed it remains top-notch, and viewers who aren&#8217;t too jaded by the many horror films that have come in its wake &#8220;will surely find themselves genuinely frightened, at least during the third section of the film, when the situation builds to a feverish pitch, and it becomes increasingly clear that most members of our ensemble cast are not long for this (living) world.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Night-Jones.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Night-Jones.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"968\" height=\"726\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-97709\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Night-Jones.png 968w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Night-Jones-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Night-Jones-128x96.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Night-Jones-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Night-Jones-360x270.png 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 968px) 100vw, 968px\" \/><\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>Roman Polanski&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=32307\"><em>Rosemary\u2019s Baby<\/em><\/a> simply never gets old. As I noted in my review, &#8220;Each element of this masterfully constructed psychological horror film &#8216;works&#8217; \u2014 from William Fraker\u2019s cinematography, to Polanski\u2019s unusual camera placements (he often films scenes through doorways), to fine use of sound and music, to judicious set designs and strategic use of outdoor New York locales, to the perfect casting of each character.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Rosemarys-Baby-Cassavetes-Farrow.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Rosemarys-Baby-Cassavetes-Farrow.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1289\" height=\"694\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-97765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Rosemarys-Baby-Cassavetes-Farrow.png 1289w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Rosemarys-Baby-Cassavetes-Farrow-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Rosemarys-Baby-Cassavetes-Farrow-1024x551.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Rosemarys-Baby-Cassavetes-Farrow-128x69.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Rosemarys-Baby-Cassavetes-Farrow-768x413.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Rosemarys-Baby-Cassavetes-Farrow-501x270.png 501w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1289px) 100vw, 1289px\" \/><\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Rosemary&#8217;s Baby<\/em> co-star John Cassavetes was just breaking through with a shift in his own iconic directorial career that year, as seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=83660\"><em>Faces<\/em><\/a> &#8212; an &#8220;utterly bleak yet cinematically groundbreaking look at a bourgeois marriage in decay,&#8221; featuring &#8220;fine, natural performances by everyone involved, and provid[ing] a daringly unfiltered look at class and gender relations in 1960s America.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Faces-Unhappy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Faces-Unhappy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"362\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-97730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Faces-Unhappy.jpg 600w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Faces-Unhappy-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Faces-Unhappy-128x77.jpg 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Faces-Unhappy-448x270.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m excited to revisit <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=1596\"><em>The Yellow Submarine<\/em><\/a> for the first time with my teenage son <em>(I&#8217;ll report back on how that goes)<\/em>. As I noted in my review from back in 2006 (four years before he was born): &#8220;The Beatles\u2019 only animated film \u2014 featuring their music and their cartoon likenesses but not their actual voices \u2014 remains as enjoyable and mind-blowing today as it was 30+ years ago&#8230; The sheer variety of animation techniques in <em>Yellow Submarine<\/em> is blissfully overwhelming,&#8221; and &#8220;it\u2019s enormously satisfying to see the Beatles immortalized as cartoon caricatures&#8221; with &#8220;just a few strategically drawn lines mak[ing] each of them instantly recognizable.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Yellow-Submarine-Beatles2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Yellow-Submarine-Beatles2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1706\" height=\"1012\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-97711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Yellow-Submarine-Beatles2.png 1706w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Yellow-Submarine-Beatles2-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Yellow-Submarine-Beatles2-1024x607.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Yellow-Submarine-Beatles2-128x76.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Yellow-Submarine-Beatles2-768x456.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Yellow-Submarine-Beatles2-1536x911.png 1536w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Yellow-Submarine-Beatles2-455x270.png 455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1706px) 100vw, 1706px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Of course, in 1968 one must give a shout-out to Stanley Kubrick&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=73446\"><em>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em><\/a>, which earned Peary&#8217;s vote as Best Picture of the Year and remains an enduring cautionary tale now more than ever, in the age of proliferating AI. (&#8220;I&#8217;m sorry, Dave. I&#8217;m afraid I can&#8217;t do that.&#8221;)<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2001-Cinematography.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2001-Cinematography.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"864\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-97721\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2001-Cinematography.png 1920w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2001-Cinematography-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2001-Cinematography-1024x461.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2001-Cinematography-128x58.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2001-Cinematography-768x346.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2001-Cinematography-1536x691.png 1536w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2001-Cinematography-600x270.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>A must-see cult favorite from 1968 is Michael Reeves&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=44573\"><em>The Conqueror\u2019s Worm<\/em>, a.k.a. <em>The Witchfinder General<\/em><\/a>, featuring Vincent Price as infamous witchfinder Matthew Hopkins in a horrific tale of &#8220;relentless violence [which] has a (sadly relevant) purpose, showing how easily mankind can descend into joy of torture \u2014 or at least mindless acceptance of it as commonplace and necessary.&#8221; Also noteworthy is &#8220;the film\u2019s gorgeous cinematography, showcasing real-life horror taking place in an atmospheric landscape of Gothic forests, meadows, village squares, and dank interiors.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Price.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Price.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1288\" height=\"712\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-97738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Price.png 1288w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Price-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Price-1024x566.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Price-128x71.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Price-768x425.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Price-488x270.png 488w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1288px) 100vw, 1288px\" \/><\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of satanism, a personal favorite is Hammer Studios&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=3188\"><em>The Devil\u2019s Bride<\/em> a.k.a. <em>The Devil Rides Out<\/em><\/a>, in which &#8220;the script, musical score, acting, and set designs all contribute towards the creation of a suspenseful, sometimes humorous tale of demonic possession in our midst,&#8221; and the special effects &#8220;convey a frighteningly believable alternate universe.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Devil-Rides-Out-Satanism.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Devil-Rides-Out-Satanism.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"793\" height=\"474\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-97713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Devil-Rides-Out-Satanism.jpg 793w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Devil-Rides-Out-Satanism-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Devil-Rides-Out-Satanism-128x77.jpg 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Devil-Rides-Out-Satanism-768x459.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Devil-Rides-Out-Satanism-452x270.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 793px) 100vw, 793px\" \/><\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>Peter Yates&#8217;s action-packed crime drama <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=15490\"><em>Bullitt<\/em><\/a>, starring Steve McQueen in the title role, remains well worth a look. Interestingly, as I noted in my review, it&#8217;s &#8220;so closely associated with McQueen\u2019s [Ford Mustang GT Fastback] (and the justifiably lauded car chase it\u2019s involved in) that it\u2019s easy to overlook how enjoyable the film is as a police procedural and character study.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bullitt-Car.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bullitt-Car.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1275\" height=\"708\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-97727\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bullitt-Car.png 1275w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bullitt-Car-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bullitt-Car-1024x569.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bullitt-Car-128x71.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bullitt-Car-768x426.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bullitt-Car-486x270.png 486w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bullitt-Car-1038x576.png 1038w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1275px) 100vw, 1275px\" \/><\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>A dark comedy classic from that year also worth a revisit is <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=31785\"><em>The Odd Couple<\/em><\/a>, based on Neal Simon&#8217;s play and starring a perfectly cast Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau &#8220;as the title &#8216;couple&#8217;; their comedic timing and rapport is impeccable.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Odd-Couple-Matthau-Lemmon.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Odd-Couple-Matthau-Lemmon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1294\" height=\"542\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-97725\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Odd-Couple-Matthau-Lemmon.png 1294w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Odd-Couple-Matthau-Lemmon-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Odd-Couple-Matthau-Lemmon-1024x429.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Odd-Couple-Matthau-Lemmon-128x54.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Odd-Couple-Matthau-Lemmon-768x322.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Odd-Couple-Matthau-Lemmon-604x253.png 604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1294px) 100vw, 1294px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Finally, there were several highly memorable matriarchal performances that year by aging Hollywood divas.
