Out of 74 total titles, I voted 32 &#8212; or ~43% &#8212; as must-see; here are just a few. who insists upon making it difficult for life to exist upon this planet.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Numbers wise, only six of the 32 titles are in a language other than English: one in Japanese (Kurosawa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=94449\"><em>High and Low<\/em><\/a>), three in Italian (Fellini\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=94960\"><em>8 1\/2<\/em><\/a>, Mario Monicelli&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=94926\"><em>The Organizer<\/em><\/a>, and Vittorio de Sica&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=5712\"><em>Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow<\/em><\/a>), and two in Spanish &#8212; including the powerful Spanish documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=94672\"><em>To Die in Madrid<\/em><\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/To-Die-in-Madrid-Republic-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/To-Die-in-Madrid-Republic-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"742\" height=\"568\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-95042\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/To-Die-in-Madrid-Republic-1.png 742w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/To-Die-in-Madrid-Republic-1-300x230.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/To-Die-in-Madrid-Republic-1-128x98.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/To-Die-in-Madrid-Republic-1-353x270.png 353w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 742px) 100vw, 742px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Several are British &#8212; featuring shadowy cinematography by Douglas Slocombe and starring Dirk Bogarde as \u201ca calculating and unflappable servant-for-hire who knows exactly the right moves to make at each moment as he pursues his self-serving, often inscrutable goals\u201d while helping to care for an alcoholic financier (James Fox).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Servant-Cinematography.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Servant-Cinematography-1024x627.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"392\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-95009\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Servant-Cinematography-1024x627.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Servant-Cinematography-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Servant-Cinematography-128x78.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Servant-Cinematography-768x470.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Servant-Cinematography-1536x940.png 1536w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Servant-Cinematography-441x270.png 441w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Servant-Cinematography.png 1691w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>British director Alexander Mackendrick\u2019s little-seen <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=90791\"><em>A Boy Ten Feet Tall<\/em> (a.k.a. <em>Sammy Going South<\/em><\/a>) tells the unusual story of a ten-year-old boy (Fergus McClelland) embarking on a trek across Africa to find his aunt, and encountering Edward G. Robinson\u2019s grizzled jewel miner along the way. McClelland and Robinson are excellent together, and the cinematography by Erwin Hiller is often beautiful.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Boy-Ten-Feet-Tall-Tree-Silhouette.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Boy-Ten-Feet-Tall-Tree-Silhouette-1024x446.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"279\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-95032\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Boy-Ten-Feet-Tall-Tree-Silhouette-1024x446.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Boy-Ten-Feet-Tall-Tree-Silhouette-300x131.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Boy-Ten-Feet-Tall-Tree-Silhouette-128x56.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Boy-Ten-Feet-Tall-Tree-Silhouette-768x334.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Boy-Ten-Feet-Tall-Tree-Silhouette-604x263.png 604w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Boy-Ten-Feet-Tall-Tree-Silhouette.png 1165w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=4726\">Murder at the Gallop<\/a><\/em> remains a delightful Agatha Christie adaptation featuring jowly Margaret Rutherford as &#8220;prim, spinsterish Miss Marple.&#8221; As I note in my review, &#8220;With her otherworldly facial grimaces and her indomitable lust for sleuthing (and snooping), Rutherford carries the film with ease.\u201d<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/murder-gallop-marple.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/murder-gallop-marple.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"848\" height=\"476\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-95014\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/murder-gallop-marple.png 848w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/murder-gallop-marple-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/murder-gallop-marple-128x72.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/murder-gallop-marple-768x431.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/murder-gallop-marple-481x270.png 481w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 848px) 100vw, 848px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>From all of 1963&#8217;s titles, what stands out most is Hitchcock&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=10590\"><em>The Birds<\/em><\/a> &#8212; one of his most unique and suspenseful thrillers, telling a metaphorically rich tale of a seaside town overtaken by gulls, crows, ravens, sparrows, and finches &#8212; for unknown reasons&#8230;<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Why are they doing this? Why are they doing this? They said when you got here the whole thing started. Who are you? What are you? Where did you come from? I think you&#8217;re the cause of all of this. I think you&#8217;re evil. EVIL!&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Who-Are-You.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Who-Are-You-1024x557.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"348\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-95022\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Who-Are-You-1024x557.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Who-Are-You-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Who-Are-You-128x70.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Who-Are-You-768x418.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Who-Are-You-497x270.png 497w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Who-Are-You.png 1291w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>The second James Bond film &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=44880\"><em>From Russia With Love<\/em><\/a> &#8212; is a worthy successor to <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=33775\"><em>Dr. No<\/em> (1962)<\/a>, featuring a couple of memorable villains: blond Robert Shaw as a psychopathic British traitor, and Lotte Lenya as diabolical Rosa Klebb.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/From-Russia-With-Love.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/From-Russia-With-Love-1024x571.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"357\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-95007\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/From-Russia-With-Love-1024x571.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/From-Russia-With-Love-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/From-Russia-With-Love-128x71.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/From-Russia-With-Love-768x429.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/From-Russia-With-Love-484x270.png 484w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/From-Russia-With-Love.png 1265w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=44388\"><em>Jason and the Argonauts<\/em><\/a> showcases some of Ray Harryhausen\u2019s most memorable stop-motion animation, including (of course) the sword fighting skeletons, but also the giant statue of Talos coming to life and gruesome harpies relentlessly plaguing blind Phineus.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Jason-Skeletons-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Jason-Skeletons-1-1024x614.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"384\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-95013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Jason-Skeletons-1-1024x614.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Jason-Skeletons-1-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Jason-Skeletons-1-128x77.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Jason-Skeletons-1-768x461.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Jason-Skeletons-1-450x270.png 450w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Jason-Skeletons-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Martin Ritt\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=52636\"><em>Hud<\/em><\/a>, a \u201cfilm about alienation in all its forms,\u201d is brutal viewing &#8212; worth watching for the powerful performances by co-stars Paul Newman and Patricia Neal, but not likely to engender much desire for a revisit.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hud.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hud.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"853\" height=\"368\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-95008\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hud.png 853w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hud-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hud-128x55.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hud-768x331.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hud-604x261.png 604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 853px) 100vw, 853px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Joseph L. Mankiewicz&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=39512\"><em>Cleopatra<\/em><\/a> &#8212; notorious for its overblown budget and multi-year filming saga &#8212; is actually &#8220;a reasonably engaging (if over-long) saga of opulence, narcissism, treachery, and high drama among the elite ruling class,\u201d with literally  \u201cno expense [being] spared to (re)create a vision of ancient Egypt and Rome fantastic enough to represent the delusional grandeur of such fabled rulers.\u201d It nearly took down 20th Century Fox.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cleopatra-Entrance.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cleopatra-Entrance-1024x461.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"288\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-95036\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cleopatra-Entrance-1024x461.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cleopatra-Entrance-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cleopatra-Entrance-128x58.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cleopatra-Entrance-768x346.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cleopatra-Entrance-600x270.png 600w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cleopatra-Entrance.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Finally, Roger Corman&#8217;s low-budget sci-fi thriller <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=15253\"><em>X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes<\/em><\/a> remains an enjoyable flick about the \u201cinevitable downward spiral of a man [Ray Milland] who has&#8230; clearly become a &#8216;freak&#8217; of nature, demonstrating that one \u201cwho can see \u2018everything\u2019 may have access to universal secrets best left untapped.\u201d<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_95020\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95020\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/XRay-Eyes-Glasses.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/XRay-Eyes-Glasses-1024x555.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"347\" class=\"size-large wp-image-95020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/XRay-Eyes-Glasses-1024x555.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/XRay-Eyes-Glasses-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/XRay-Eyes-Glasses-128x69.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/XRay-Eyes-Glasses-768x416.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/XRay-Eyes-Glasses-498x270.png 498w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/XRay-Eyes-Glasses.png 1295w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-95020\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cWe are virtually blind \u2014 all of us.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<ul>\n<p>As I&#8217;m reflecting on all these titles, I&#8217;m seeing a definite theme of terror and unease mixed with revolution and resilience.
