Unfortunately, their collaboration soured pretty quickly, and the resulting film is far from satisfying. I haven&#8217;t read Faulkner&#8217;s novel, but it&#8217;s difficult to tell from this film what its primary themes are, other than presenting a &#8220;picaresque&#8221; rascal (McQueen) as a protagonist and showing a kid coming-of-age. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-McQueen.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-McQueen.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"436\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-93767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-McQueen.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-McQueen-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-McQueen-128x55.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-McQueen-768x327.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-McQueen-604x257.png 604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this film held more appeal to viewers at the time who were familiar with the source material, and\/or were simply eager to see McQueen. Crosse (in his final cinematic role) was nominated for a Supporting Actor Oscar, but his character doesn&#8217;t have much depth, either. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Crosse.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Crosse.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"436\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-93769\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Crosse.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Crosse-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Crosse-128x55.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Crosse-768x327.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Crosse-604x257.png 604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, poor Juano Hernandez &#8212; given a meaty starring role in an earlier Faulkner adaptation, <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=50273\">1949&#8217;s <em>Intruder in the Dust<\/em><\/a> &#8212; is relegated to a brief appearance here as &#8220;Uncle Possum&#8221;, with his most significant scene showing him getting undressed for bed and lying down chastely next to Vogel, after reminding him to say his prayers. (Why was this important enough to take up screentime? And what&#8217;s with the earlier sequence of naked boys jumping into a lake?) <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Hernandez.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Hernandez.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"436\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-93772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Hernandez.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Hernandez-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Hernandez-128x55.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Hernandez-768x327.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Reivers-Hernandez-604x257.png 604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of racial tensions, they&#8217;re mostly glossed over here in a blatantly revisionist fashion, as though Blacks and Whites in turn-of-the-century South &#8212; with the exception of a few bigots, naturally &#8212; played and worked together just fine.
