Scott Films<\/li>\n<li>Kidnapping <\/li>\n<li>Mike Nichols Films<\/li>\n<li>Science Fiction<\/li>\n<li>Scientists<\/li>\n<li>Talking Animals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Review: <\/strong><br \/>\nDirector Mike Nichols and screenwriter Buck Henry teamed up for a third time &#8212; after <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=27573\"><em>The Graduate<\/em> (1967)<\/a> and <em>Catch-22<\/em> (1970) &#8212; for this sci-fi-thriller adaptation of a 1967 novel by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Merle\">French author Robert Merle<\/a>. Unfortunately, it&#8217;s a much less successful collaboration, ultimately coming across like a weird missed opportunity &#8212; a movie which surely would have been quite different in the hands of Roman Polanski (the originally intended director). Obviously, one must suspend disbelief right away in order to go with the film&#8217;s premise that dolphins have learned to understand and speak English:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Dolphin.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Dolphin-1024x432.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"270\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-92371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Dolphin-1024x432.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Dolphin-300x127.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Dolphin-128x54.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Dolphin-768x324.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Dolphin-604x255.png 604w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Dolphin.png 1283w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>&#8230; which at first seems reasonably plausible, but as the movie progresses and the dolphins are shown to possess even greater comprehension, I simply couldn&#8217;t buy it. To their credit, the cast seems fully committed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Still-Green.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Still-Green-1024x422.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"264\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-92373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Still-Green-1024x422.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Still-Green-300x123.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Still-Green-128x53.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Still-Green-768x316.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Still-Green-604x249.png 604w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Day-of-the-Dolphin-Still-Green.png 1290w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and there are a couple of character switcheroos that one doesn&#8217;t see coming. While it has its fans (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvdtalk.com\/dvdsavant\/s893day.html\">DVD Savant&#8217;s review<\/a>, for instance), I&#8217;m more in agreement with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1973\/12\/20\/archives\/film-underwater-talkiescott-stars-in-nicholss-day-of-the-dolphin.html\">Vincent Canby&#8217;s review for the NY Times<\/a> in which he refers to this as &#8220;a Flipper film for adults, a <em>Day of the Jackal<\/em> for kids and a Lassie film for scuba divers of all ages.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notable Performances, Qualities, and Moments:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>George C.
