Finally, Peary points out that &#8220;the picture is beautifully, hauntingly photographed&#8221; (true) and notes that the &#8220;original music is by Pink Floyd.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>I have mixed feelings about this cult film, which at first seems to be pushing a typically countercultural agenda that an authentic and meaningful life is to be found in breaking free from society&#8217;s dominant norms around sex and clothing and overall purpose for being.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Romance.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Romance-1024x435.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-91815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Romance-1024x435.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Romance-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Romance-128x54.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Romance-768x326.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Romance-604x257.png 604w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Romance.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By the end, however, the storyline has taken a reasonably nuanced arc, thus leaving one less certain. <\/p>\n<p>When the film opens, we&#8217;re appropriately annoyed by Ogier&#8217;s spoiled White rich woman, who lives such a pampered life she spends her hours attemping to obtain and then sell illegally gotten plumage. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Not-For-Sale.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Not-For-Sale-1024x435.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-91812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Not-For-Sale-1024x435.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Not-For-Sale-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Not-For-Sale-128x54.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Not-For-Sale-768x326.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Not-For-Sale-604x257.png 604w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Not-For-Sale.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Upon arrival at Gothard&#8217;s campground, we can tell she&#8217;s intrigued by the &#8220;alternative lifestyle&#8221; on display, though most likely simply from voyeurism and excitement-seeking. Once she begins her actual trek with the motley troupe, however, we can see her opening up, both physically and spiritually:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Drinking.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Drinking-1024x435.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-91814\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Drinking-1024x435.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Drinking-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Drinking-128x54.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Drinking-768x326.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Drinking-604x257.png 604w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Valley-Drinking.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and while there are tensions, clearly Ogier&#8217;s character seems &#8220;meant&#8221; for this quest. (She&#8217;s never forced to come along, and in fact is advised against it.) Once they arrive deep within the jungles and interact with the Mapuga, she is eager to share her many insights &#8212; at which point we hear a refreshing counterbalance to her naive giddiness. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Viviane (Ogier):<\/strong> Olivier, isn&#8217;t it wonderful? We&#8217;ve become so close to them. We&#8217;re practically like them&#8230; I&#8217;m happy. We&#8217;ve found truth, you know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olivier (Gothard):<\/strong> It&#8217;s just the opposite&#8230; We&#8217;re lying. Whatever Gaetan [Kalfon] says, we&#8217;re tourists here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Viviane:<\/strong> It&#8217;s disgusting, hearing you talk like that! <\/p>\n<p><strong>Olivier:<\/strong> Dancing&#8217;s easy. Could you work with them?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Viviane:<\/strong> Yes, absolutely!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olivier:<\/strong> Women are even more exploited here. You know, Viviane, among [this tribe], society is bound by very strict rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Viviane:<\/strong> Same with ours!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olivier:<\/strong> It&#8217;s not the same thing&#8230; We&#8217;re trying to break ours. When they dance, it&#8217;s not just for the pleasure of it, it&#8217;s to obey something&#8230; We seek after pleasure, and maybe peace.
