According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcm.com\/tcmdb\/title\/72342\/darling#articles-reviews?articleId=35388\">TCM&#8217;s article<\/a>, Schlesinger noted that the story &#8220;started with the idea of the ghastliness of the present-day attitude of people who want something for nothing,&#8221; with &#8220;Diana Scott, the principal character, emerg[ing] in the script of <em>Darling<\/em> as an amalgam of various people we had known.&#8221; Unfortunately, while Christie does indeed effectively embody a beautiful, vapid, seemingly compass-less young woman, there isn&#8217;t a whole lot of inherent interest in seeing someone like this on screen for two-hours+. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Darling-Christie-Bogarde.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Darling-Christie-Bogarde-1024x623.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"389\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-88368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Darling-Christie-Bogarde-1024x623.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Darling-Christie-Bogarde-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Darling-Christie-Bogarde-128x78.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Darling-Christie-Bogarde-768x467.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Darling-Christie-Bogarde-444x270.png 444w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Darling-Christie-Bogarde.png 1195w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re actually filled with distaste for both her and Bogarde &#8212; her first &#8220;conquest&#8221; in the film &#8212; from the beginning, due to both of them wantonly abandoning their spouses (and, in Bogarde&#8217;s case, two young kids). However, her eventual acceptance of a role as de Vilallonga&#8217;s token wife (perhaps unsurprisingly) does nothing to eradicate the emptiness she feels at the core of her being.
