&#8212; adapted by &#8220;Louise de Vilmorin from Vivant Denon&#8217;s 18th-century story &#8216;Point de Lendemain'&#8221; &#8212; was &#8220;banned in several U.S. towns and had footage excised in others,&#8221; and &#8220;obscenity charges were leveled at several theater owners, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacobellis_v._Ohio\">precedent-setting court decisions<\/a> that cleared the way for more sexual freedom in the cinema.&#8221; As Peary notes, &#8220;Bory is, yes, <em>boring<\/em> &#8212; you forget what he looks like a minute after the film ends; but Moreau is something special: when she lets down and brushes her hair and walks outside in her white nightgown, she makes the quickest transition from dowdy&#8221; without (as Malle himself put it) slowly panning away to the window at a critical moment &#8212; though it should be pointed out there&#8217;s nothing graphic at all.
