According to a recent book by Richard Sandomir entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hachettebooks.com\/titles\/richard-sandomir\/the-pride-of-the-yankees\/9780316355162\/\"><em>The Pride of the Yankees: Lou Gehrig, Gary Cooper, and the Making of a Classic<\/em> (2017)<\/a>, the entire movie was heavily informed by active input from Gehrig&#8217;s widow, Eleanor. While the character of Cooper&#8217;s German mother (Janssen) was apparently toned down from real life: <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Janssen2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Janssen2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"954\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75851\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Janssen2.png 954w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Janssen2-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Janssen2-128x97.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Janssen2-768x580.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Janssen2-358x270.png 358w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 954px) 100vw, 954px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; she&#8217;s still seriously obnoxious (Eleanor didn&#8217;t get along with her at all), and a good deal of the storyline is taken up both with Lou trying to hide his career from his mom, and Janssen&#8217;s clashes with poor newlywed Eleanor (who at least ultimately triumphs as Gehrig&#8217;s new &#8220;best girl&#8221;). <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Wright3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Wright3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"954\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Wright3.png 954w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Wright3-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Wright3-128x97.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Wright3-768x580.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Wright3-358x270.png 358w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 954px) 100vw, 954px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Babe Ruth enjoyed playing a supporting role in the movie, and lost a significant amount of weight before filming began (see Sandomir&#8217;s absorbing book for much more detail on this and every other detail of the film&#8217;s conception, production, and reception). <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Ruth.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Ruth.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"954\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Ruth.png 954w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Ruth-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Ruth-128x97.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Ruth-768x580.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Pride-of-the-Yankees-Ruth-358x270.png 358w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 954px) 100vw, 954px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, this honorable biopic &#8212; which began shooting just 8 months after Gehrig&#8217;s death &#8212; tries to tell a compelling story about an impressive baseball player whose life wasn&#8217;t really all that dramatic until he suddenly fell ill;
