Director Val Guest does a fine job showing how easily a young woman from a humble background can get sucked into the cut-throat scramble for fame and luxury, and Janette Scott is appropriately wide-eyed and pretty as the central character, who quickly ditches her fiance and working-class family in exchange for a bit of glamour and excitement. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/Contest-Girl-Scott.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/Contest-Girl-Scott-1024x516.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"323\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-57908\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/Contest-Girl-Scott-1024x516.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/Contest-Girl-Scott-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/Contest-Girl-Scott-128x64.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/Contest-Girl-Scott-768x387.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/Contest-Girl-Scott-1536x773.png 1536w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/Contest-Girl-Scott-536x270.png 536w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/Contest-Girl-Scott.png 1825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, an ongoing subplot in which Scott must fend off Hendry&#8217;s amorous advances fails to generate much interest, primarily because there&#8217;s so little chemistry between the two leads; instead, we&#8217;re left to focus on Scott&#8217;s inevitable education about the cruel realities (who knew?) of competitive pageantry.
