Bezzerides<\/a> &#8212; perhaps best known for scripting Mickey Spillane&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=2837\"><em>Kiss Me Deadly<\/em> (1955)<\/a> &#8212; wrote the source novel and screenplay for this powerfully gritty <em>noir<\/em> tale about deep corruption in the trucking and agricultural industries. Made just before <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=40903\"><em>Night and the City<\/em> (1950)<\/a>, this was director Jules Dassin&#8217;s next-to-last American film &#8212; following on the heels of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=4946\"><em>Brute Force<\/em> (1947)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=37667\"><em>The Naked City<\/em> (1948)<\/a> &#8212; while various individuals ultimately reveal themselves to have higher ideals, the prevailing ethos is one of sticking it to every other person you meet as often as possible. <\/p>\n<p>The storyline is refreshingly grounded in &#8220;real life&#8221; Even lowly &#8220;fortune tellers&#8221; (Cortesa is a thinly veiled prostitute) are caught up in the racket, though it&#8217;s clear she doesn&#8217;t want to be.
