Novello falls for Daisy, but her jealous boyfriend (Malcolm Keen) &#8212; a police detective &#8212; is convinced that Novello may be The Avenger, and begins to investigate the case.\n<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p>\n<strong>Genres, Themes, Actors, and Directors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hitchcock Films<\/li>\n<li>Jack the Ripper<\/li>\n<li>Love Triangle<\/li>\n<li>Murder Mystery<\/li>\n<li>Serial Killers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Review: <\/strong><br \/>\nDespite having helmed at least two earlier movies (1925&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=10690\"><em>The Pleasure Garden<\/em><\/a> and 1926&#8217;s now-lost <em>The Mountain Eagle<\/em>), Alfred Hitchcock considered <em>The Lodger<\/em> &#8212; based on Marie Belloc Lowndes&#8217; Jack the Ripper-inspired novel &#8212; to be his &#8220;true&#8221; directorial debut. While it possesses many elements of Hitch&#8217;s soon-to-be-signature style, however, it suffers from overly broad acting (Novello was a matinee idol, not a thespian) and terribly slow pacing. Like John Brahm&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=3896\">1944 remake<\/a> (starring Laird Cregar), it&#8217;s both highly atmospheric and visually inspired (see stills below) &#8212; but also narratively flawed, given that there aren&#8217;t really any other suspects in sight. <em>The Lodger<\/em> only remains must-see viewing due to its status as an early outing by Hitchcock, and as a precursor to Brahm&#8217;s superior version. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Redeeming Qualities and Moments: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A reasonably suspenseful tale of murder and romance<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/11\/lodger-image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/11\/lodger-image.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4803\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Some cleverly framed shots<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/11\/lodger-framing.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/11\/lodger-framing.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4804\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Atmospheric cinematography<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/11\/lodger-scarf.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/11\/lodger-scarf.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4805\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Must See? <\/strong><br \/>\nYes, but only for its significance as one of Hitchcock&#8217;s earliest signature works.
