When Lee&#8217;s father (Walter Brennan) is sent to prison awaiting execution, and a double agent (Gene Lockhart) works to turn in informers, Lee &#8212; whose fiance (Dennis O&#8217;Keefe) is understandably distressed by her life-saving pretense of being Donlevy&#8217;s lover &#8212; must decide whether to protect her own family or the greater cause of her nation.\n<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p>\n<strong>Genres:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anna Lee Films<\/li>\n<li>Assassination<\/li>\n<li>Brian Donlevy Films<\/li>\n<li>Fritz Lang Films<\/li>\n<li>Nazis<\/li>\n<li>Resistance<\/li>\n<li>Walter Brennan Films<\/li>\n<li>World War II<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Review: <\/strong><br \/>\nVery loosely based upon the real-life assassination of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reinhard_Heydrich\">Reinhard Heydrich<\/a>, this Fritz Lang propaganda film &#8212; co-scripted by Bertolt Brecht, and clocking in at 134 minutes &#8212; is (as noted in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcm.com\/this-month\/article\/324%7C0\/Hangmen-Also-Die.html\">TCM&#8217;s article<\/a>) &#8220;one of Lang&#8217;s quartet of war-inspired productions including <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=46545\"><em>Man Hunt<\/em> (1941)<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=37200\"><em>Ministry of Fear<\/em> (1944)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=21563\"><em>Cloak and Dagger<\/em> (1946)<\/a>.&#8221; TCM informs us that &#8220;though these films have never been considered Lang&#8217;s best work, their release amidst wartime fervor made them successful contributions to the Hollywood propaganda effort.&#8221; As with Fred Zinneman&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=46308\"><em>The Seventh Cross<\/em> (1944)<\/a>, we&#8217;re most intrigued by the complexity of this story &#8212; that is, how many people are (indeed, must be) involved in efforts to resist fascism. Lee&#8217;s character arc is perhaps most notable: she shifts from justifiably furious with Donlevy for placing her family&#8217;s previously untouched lives in danger, to gradual recognition of the collective situation: <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Hangmen-Also-Die-Lee.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Hangmen-Also-Die-Lee.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1679\" height=\"1009\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54182\"
