Soon she comes to visit, thinking Laughton looks like Gargan &#8212; and when she finds out the truth, she has a hard choice to make.\n<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p>\n<strong>Genres:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Carole Lombard Films<\/li>\n<li>Charles Laughton Films<\/li>\n<li>Love Triangle<\/li>\n<li>Play Adaptation<\/li>\n<li>Womanizers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Review: <\/strong><br \/>\nBefore achieving fame as a successful Hollywood screenwriter, Garson Kanin (husband of writer-actress Ruth Gordon) directed a few studio films, including <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=25979\"><em>Tom, Dick, and Harry<\/em> (1941)<\/a> and this adaptation of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/They_Knew_What_They_Wanted_(play)\">Sidney Howard&#8217;s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1924 play<\/a>. Unfortunately, it&#8217;s a creaky production, dominated by Laughton&#8217;s overly enthusiastic portrayal of a hardy Italian who we want to like but can&#8217;t help feeling annoyed by. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/They-Knew-What-They-Wanted-Laughton2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/They-Knew-What-They-Wanted-Laughton2-1024x656.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"410\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-54146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/They-Knew-What-They-Wanted-Laughton2-1024x656.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/They-Knew-What-They-Wanted-Laughton2-300x192.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/They-Knew-What-They-Wanted-Laughton2-128x82.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/They-Knew-What-They-Wanted-Laughton2-768x492.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/They-Knew-What-They-Wanted-Laughton2-1536x985.png 1536w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/They-Knew-What-They-Wanted-Laughton2-421x270.png 421w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/They-Knew-What-They-Wanted-Laughton2.png 1577w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He makes a few key mistakes early on out of social anxiety, and things spiral from there, thanks to Lombard&#8217;s vulnerability and the presence of womanizing Gargan.
