This comedic interpretation of the plight of poverty-stricken Georgia sharecroppers simply doesn&#8217;t work, coming across as mean-spirited and caricatured rather than nuanced or empathetic. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Tobacco-Road-Still.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Tobacco-Road-Still-1024x623.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"389\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-64306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Tobacco-Road-Still-1024x623.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Tobacco-Road-Still-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Tobacco-Road-Still-128x78.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Tobacco-Road-Still-768x467.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Tobacco-Road-Still-1536x935.png 1536w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Tobacco-Road-Still-444x270.png 444w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Tobacco-Road-Still.png 1681w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(It&#8217;s hard to know how much of this was due to Hays Code restrictions which forced numerous drastic cuts and shifts in tone.) Critics of the day were in agreement, with Bosley Crowther of the <em>New York Times<\/em> referring to it as &#8220;a leisurely picnic with a batch of moldy Georgia crackers&#8221; (though audiences appeared to like it well enough).
