Completely forgotten today except by film buffs and old-time comics (their fans include Mel Brooks and, believe it not, Pauline Kael), the team was undeniably popular in the late-1930s and inarguably bridged the styles of film comedy that dominated the early- and mid-1930s (adapted from the stage and hangers-on from the silent era) with the slicker, faster, and streamlined comedians (Bob Hope, Abbott &#038; Costello, etc.) that would dominate the forties, but their rubber-faced mugging generally plays more silly than funny.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Three-Musketeers-Ritz3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Three-Musketeers-Ritz3-1024x751.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"469\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-65622\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Three-Musketeers-Ritz3-1024x751.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Three-Musketeers-Ritz3-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Three-Musketeers-Ritz3-128x94.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Three-Musketeers-Ritz3-768x563.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Three-Musketeers-Ritz3-368x270.png 368w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Three-Musketeers-Ritz3.png 1403w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frank Nugent, in his review for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1939\/02\/18\/archives\/the-screen-dumass-three-musketeers-falls-afoul-the-ritzes-at-the.html\">the New York Times<\/a>, was among the group&#8217;s current-day detractors, noting, &#8220;They leave me as cold as a marinated herring and twice as limp.&#8221; With that said, Ameche is game as D&#8217;Artagnan, and nicely matched by Barnes as a sly villainess &#8212; and the entire production is well-mounted. At just over 70 minutes long, it&#8217;s tolerable but innocuous.
