DeMille was not only the highest-grossing film of 1950, but was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two (Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design). Unfortunately, the look of this film is its best feature by far: the storyline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Judges+16&#038;version=NIV\">(based on a fairly short passage from the book of Judges)<\/a> is overly long (Lansbury&#8217;s character was added to provide motivation for Delilah&#8217;s betrayal)&#8230; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Lansbury-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Lansbury-1-1024x732.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"458\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-69162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Lansbury-1-1024x732.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Lansbury-1-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Lansbury-1-128x92.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Lansbury-1-768x549.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Lansbury-1-377x270.png 377w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Lansbury-1.png 1419w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n&#8230; slow-moving, and not all that involving. (As Dave Sindelair puts it, <a href=\"https:\/\/fantasticmoviemusings.com\/2016\/07\/11\/samson-and-delilah-1949\/\">&#8220;the actors are saddled with a script that is as fast-moving as a sleepy turtle and as agile as a three-legged elephant&#8221;.<\/a>) Speaking of the actors, they&#8217;re in solid melodramatic territory here, mouthing hoary lines while looking gorgeous (especially Lamarr, and especially in the newly released Blu-Ray edition). <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Cinematography1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Cinematography1-1024x743.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"464\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-41841\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Cinematography1-1024x743.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Cinematography1-128x93.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Cinematography1-300x218.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Cinematography1-768x558.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samson-and-Delilah-Cinematography1.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those in the mood for a lavish, colorful, visual feast with plenty of extras and elaborate sets may enjoy this one, but it&#8217;s not on a par with more engaging mid-century Biblical epics.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>The most exciting sequence in this film occurs during the last few minutes, and it is indeed worth viewing. (Check <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samson_and_Delilah_(1949_film)#CITEREFEyman2010\">Wikipedia<\/a> for details about its filming; it took a year to shoot and cost $150,000.)
