Perhaps not surprisingly, <em>Designing Woman<\/em> was conceived by fashion designer Helen Rose, whose marvelous costumes (a highlight) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcm.com\/tcmdb\/title\/2105\/designing-woman#articles-reviews?articleId=62616\">&#8220;included 132 gowns, an average of more than a-gown-a-minute for the 118-minute film!&#8221;<\/a> Unfortunately, Peck and Bacall&#8217;s drunken meet-cute: <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Bacall-Peck.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Bacall-Peck-1024x521.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"326\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-65651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Bacall-Peck-1024x521.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Bacall-Peck-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Bacall-Peck-128x65.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Bacall-Peck-768x391.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Bacall-Peck-530x270.png 530w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Bacall-Peck.png 1499w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and ensuing marital problems don&#8217;t elicit much sympathy or interest, and the subplots &#8212; including Peck being hounded by the corrupt promoter (Edward Platt) of a punch-drunk fighter (Mickey Shaughnessy), and Bacall&#8217;s jealousy of Peck&#8217;s former curvy fling (Dolores Gray):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Jealousy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Jealousy-1024x429.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"268\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-65647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Jealousy-1024x429.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Jealousy-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Jealousy-128x54.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Jealousy-768x322.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Jealousy-1536x644.png 1536w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Jealousy-604x253.png 604w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Designing-Woman-Jealousy.png 1853w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; are simply insipid. Worst of all are the film&#8217;s dated notions of what a woman (even one as successful, independent, beautiful, and popular as Bacall) will do to snag and keep a man; the title is a not-too-subtle play on words (get it? <em>designing<\/em> woman?).
