The framing story in which Benchley is counseled by a friend  at a gentlemen&#8217;s club is pretty thin stuff, and merely an excuse to tell three atmospherically filmed but variably engaging stories. The first (taking place during Mardi Gras) is almost laughable in its narrative simplicity: a &#8220;plain&#8221; woman (clearly pretty underneath shadowy lighting and dour make-up) is made &#8220;beautiful&#8221; by recognizing her worth, as she falls in love and loses her selfish stance towards life. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Flesh-and-Fantasy-Cinematography1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Flesh-and-Fantasy-Cinematography1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-38531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Flesh-and-Fantasy-Cinematography1.png 624w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Flesh-and-Fantasy-Cinematography1-128x98.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Flesh-and-Fantasy-Cinematography1-300x231.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second segment &#8212; based on Oscar Wilde&#8217;s short story &#8220;Lord Arthur Saville&#8217;s Crime&#8221; &#8212; is much more engaging, thanks to a provocative narrative (does being told one&#8217;s fortune compel one to carry it out?) and Robinson&#8217;s typically-committed performance as a tortured man caught in the grips of &#8220;fate&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Flesh-and-Fantasy-Robinson.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Flesh-and-Fantasy-Robinson.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-38530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Flesh-and-Fantasy-Robinson.png 624w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Flesh-and-Fantasy-Robinson-128x98.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Flesh-and-Fantasy-Robinson-300x231.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The final segment &#8212;
