Soon, however, she&#8217;s lured into making &#8220;highbrow&#8221; pictures, and rejects Haines in favor of her new leading man (Paul Ralli).\n<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p>\n<strong>Genres, Themes, Actors, and Directors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aspiring Stars<\/li>\n<li>Comedy<\/li>\n<li>Hollywood<\/li>\n<li>King Vidor Films<\/li>\n<li>Marion Davies Films<\/li>\n<li>Silent Films<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Review: <\/strong><br \/>\nAlthough Peary doesn&#8217;t list this King Vidor-directed silent comedy in his <em>GFTFF<\/em>, he nominates Marion Davies as one of the Best Actresses of the Year in his <em>Alternate Oscars<\/em>, so I&#8217;m reviewing it briefly here. Fortunately, while Davies&#8217; performance is indeed a lot of fun &#8212; what a gifted, no-holds-barred comedienne she was! &#8212; the film itself is also worth a look by all film fanatics, given its insightful skewering of silent-era Hollywood (it would make a great double-bill with <a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/?p=30414\"><em>Singin&#8217; in the Rain<\/em><\/a>). An especially delightful scene shows us Davies attempting to cry on cue, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6uS5xPWfxPY\">&#8220;Hearts and Flowers&#8221;<\/a> (so that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hearts_And_Flowers\">infamously sentimental ditty has a name<\/a>!) playing in the background, and a helpful assistant peeling onions nearby. Watch for a host of cameos by famous stars of the day &#8212; including Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, and Vidor himself. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> <em>Show People<\/em> is also of interest given the presence of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Haines\">William Haines<\/a>, an openly gay man in early Hollywood who gave up his career when he refused L.B.
