There&#8217;s a weak attempt at a romantic subplot between Gwenn&#8217;s over-worked assistants (played by Marguerite Churchill and Warren Hull), but this goes absolutely nowhere:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Romance.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Romance.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1665\" height=\"1025\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Romance.png 1665w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Romance-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Romance-1024x630.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Romance-128x79.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Romance-768x473.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Romance-1536x946.png 1536w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Romance-439x270.png 439w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1665px) 100vw, 1665px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and speaking of Gwenn, his &#8220;mad doctor&#8221; is frustratingly opaque. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Gwenn2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Gwenn2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1659\" height=\"1009\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Gwenn2.png 1659w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Gwenn2-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Gwenn2-1024x623.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Gwenn2-128x78.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Gwenn2-768x467.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Gwenn2-1536x934.png 1536w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Gwenn2-444x270.png 444w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1659px) 100vw, 1659px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s difficult to think of Gwenn as anything other than a jolly do-gooder, yet here he blithely fools around with a man&#8217;s existence to fulfill his own curiosities about death &#8212; all the same, we&#8217;re left unsatisfied in terms of knowing how exactly we&#8217;re meant to react to him and his motivations. Karloff, however, is fine from beginning to end &#8212; as with his Monster, he injects his troubled protagonist here with extraordinary pathos throughout. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Karloff3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Karloff3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1661\" height=\"1021\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Karloff3.png 1661w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Karloff3-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Karloff3-1024x629.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Karloff3-128x79.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Karloff3-768x472.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Karloff3-1536x944.png 1536w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walking-Dead-Karloff3-439x270.png 439w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1661px) 100vw, 1661px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, director Michael Curtiz and DP Hal Mohr do a fine job playing up the atmospheric nature of the screenplay, which cleverly incorporates gangster elements into its storyline;
