Watching it again recently, however, I found myself surprisingly absorbed in its tale of a vitriolic &#8220;love-hate&#8221; relationship between a couple so clearly meant for one another (if only they could get over whatever it is that keeps them clawing at one another&#8217;s throats). <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Couple2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Couple2-1024x762.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"476\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-62566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Couple2-1024x762.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Couple2-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Couple2-128x95.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Couple2-768x572.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Couple2-363x270.png 363w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Couple2.png 1385w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The aspects of the script focusing on Macready&#8217;s shady wartime dealings as the head of an international tungsten cartel (!) <em>are<\/em> a tad incomprehensible and meandering (Joseph Calleia&#8217;s detective lurks around the perimeter of the set without much to do), but are ultimately inconsequential, and fortunately don&#8217;t distract much at all from the central conflict: the tension-filled <em>menage a trois<\/em> between Macready, Ford, and Hayworth. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Triangle.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Triangle-1024x765.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"478\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-62577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Triangle-1024x765.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Triangle-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Triangle-128x96.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Triangle-768x574.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Triangle-361x270.png 361w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Triangle.png 1385w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I disagree as well with Peary&#8217;s assessment of Macready as &#8220;good and sinister&#8221; &#8212; actually, his performance here is not so much &#8220;uninteresting&#8221; as it is <em>unconvincing<\/em> (though the fault is less with Ford than with the studio heads for miscasting him in the first place). <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Ford.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Ford-1024x766.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"479\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-62568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Ford-1024x766.png 1024w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Ford-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Ford-128x96.png 128w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Ford-768x574.png 768w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Ford-361x270.png 361w, https:\/\/filmfanatic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Gilda-Ford.png 1381w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He simply doesn&#8217;t have the requisite allure or good looks to be credible as a man that a goddess &#8212; er, <em>woman<\/em> &#8212; like Gilda would get herself so hung up over. On that note, the script teasingly neglects to fill us in on the little detail of what exactly tore Gilda and Johnny apart to begin with.
